Well, I have thought about Peter's comments all day, and have this to say. First, I never took my cowboy boots on cruise. What he is thinking about are my Dehner full Wellingtons that I wore with my khakis, and perhaps with my flight suit.
Next I checked with Joe Tumminelli who was in the Maintenance department on that Med cruise. He does not remember the incident. I was the avionics officer at that time, so I have a problem about a metalsmith petty officer remembering this caper.
I can relate to my going down to the mess decks and looking into the problems down there, but to say that I said, "I am a lieutenant and you are a chief...etc." is abosolutely out of character for me.
I can remember reading the riot act to Wayne Feirtag in the VS-39 line shack, which was one of the two or three times in my career that I said the words,"I order you to ...."
I would have rather that my old friend Petty Officer Second Class Carter, tell about my teaching a few sessions on Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons." That I was proud of.
I rember the Lt. from the 1960 Essex cruise. We began to fly 21 hrs per day and our midnight food ration was in a small filthy galley. The stew was made with chicken wing tips.We complained to the LT.
He came down with us, complete with cowboy boots.
He began by dropping dirty trays and silverware on the floor. A chief came out and said "you cant do that".
The Lt.,dressed in flight clothes, said "I'm a Lt. your a chief, I can do anything I want. And my men are not going to be treated like this."
We had decent food and a clean place really fast.
