
I served in VS-34 from May 1960 to Sept 1963. I reported to the new VS-34 aboard USS Essex (CVS-9) in CVSG-60. Our skipper was Sam Sparks CAG was CMR Hensel Essex C/O was RADM Richard Fowler I was a centurion.
The photo was taken in 1959 at North American’s flight line, when I won the “Name the Trainer Contest”. I was an ensign at Whiting field flying T-28’s. The Navy flew me to Columbus, Ohio where I got to fly the 2nd T2J Buckeye off the assembly line with the company’s chief pilot. I won a $500.00 savings bond and met Gov. Mike Desalle and had a T.V. interview.
